Course: Editing Workshop (in Tamil)

The National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS), with the support of National Library Board (NLB), Singapore Tamil Teachers’ Union (STTU) and Association of Singapore Tamil Writers, is pleased to invite you to the Tamil Editing Workshop to be held on 15 & 16 May, 2010 at the STTU premises at Race Course Road, Singapore.

Editing of Tamil texts, be they short stories, novels or poems, is a rare phenomenon in the Tamil publishing world. When we look at the publishing standards in other languages, especially in English, we can see how much Tamil publishing needs to catch up. Even Nobel Prize winning authors in English need and have editors to fine-tune their books before they are published.

To address this very important need in Tamil publishing in Singapore, NBDC, NLB, STTU and Association of Singapore Tamil Writers have taken the pioneering steps to organise a Tamil editing workshop, which is probably the first such attempt in Singapore.

The workshop will be conducted over a two-day period on 15 & 16 May 2010, each day from 9 am to 6 pm. There will be lectures, demonstrations and personal exercises. The workshop will deal with fiction, non-fiction, and translation.

The highly experienced workshop leaders will include the following:
Mr Pa. Raghavan: Currently the Chief Editor of New Horizon Media’s various Tamil imprints. He has worked in Tamil weeklies Kalki and Kumudham as editor. He has written over 25 books in Tamil. Several of his popular books have been serialized in Kumudham Reporter, a Tamil magazine. Mr Raghavan has also written dialogue and screenplay for Tamil movies.

Dr Badri Seshadri: Co-founder and Managing Director of New Horizon Media. Dr Sheshadri has written science books for children and focuses on editing translation books and is himself a translator from English to Tamil. Dr Seshadri obtained his B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, USA.

Mr Arun Senkuttuvan: One of the top English newspaper editors and journalists in Singapore with more than 40 years of experience in editing and managing newspapers, magazines and books. He has served in the Straits Times, Singapore Herald, The Nation in Bangkok as well as world class publications such as the Economist, Financial Times and the Far Eastern Economic Review.

You are welcome to bring some of your own writings to the workshop which can be analysed by the workshop leaders.
